Around 500 workers in Melbourne have begun an indefinite strike at a large supermarket distribution centre. The workers are demanding that they receive the same wages and conditions that workers in similar distribution centres around Australia receive.

While the supermarket chain, Coles, ownes the produce, it has subcontracted the operation to Toll Holdings, a giant transport and logistics conglomerate.

The union organising the workers, the National Union of Workers, wants to make sure that the practice of sub-contracting is not used by companies as a way to lower workers wages and conditions.
