Iraqi workers win battle against victimisation

Earlier this year, Iraqi oil workers in the southern city of Basra staged a series of protests demanding payment of wages and an end to corruption. The head of the Iraqi Federation of Oil Unions, Mr. Hassan Juma’a Awad, was accused of illegal organising activities. Workers and their communities rallied to his defense. An international campaign calling for all charges to be dropped was also waged. Earlier this month, a Basra court dismissed all charges against Mr. Hassan Juma’a. This is an important victory for workers in Iraq.
