Workers strike in Pakistan

After workers at STALCO Company formed a union, the company terminated 12 Office Bearers of the union and locked workers out of the factory.
On the 18th of August, the All Pakistan Trade Union Federation held a protest demonstrating against the office bearers' terminations, and for the rights of workers to form a trade union.

STALCO is located in the Lahore District of Pakistan.
300 workers are employed, 90% of whom are on non-permament contracts, though some have been working there for 15 years.

On the 29th of July 2010, with the assistance of the All Pakistan Trade Union Federation (APTUF), workers of above-mentioned factory formed a union.
The company responded by sacking 12 union office bearers. The remaining workers have been subjected to threats and intimidation by management.

APTUF, to which these workers belong, is demanding:

- Stop violation of ILO Convention 98 and 87.
- Immediately reinstate all the terminated office bearers of STALCO Company (Pvt) Ltd.
     - To register STALCO Workers Union under law.
     - Stop Contract Labor System.

We request all of our partners, trade union federations, human rights groups to send solidarity messages to STALCO workers and to APTUF:
