As reported in an earlier story 10,000 miners, at the copper and gold mine, the Grasberg operation of US-based Freeport-McMoRan in West Papua, went on strike in July of this year over pay and union rights. The workers stopped when management agreed to restart talks over pay and conditions.
Negotiations broke down over the refusal of the company to offer a realistic living wage to the workers. The FSP-KEP (SPSI) has now announced that a new walkout will begin this week. Grasberg is the world’s largest gold mine and second largest producer of copper concentrates, with daily output of 61,000 tonnes of copper and gold ore. For more information click here
