The oil industry is the backbone of the Iraqi economy so its workforce has always come under pressure from various governments. While direct assassinations of trade union activist is not currently happening, the Iraqi Oil Unions are under relentless attack via the imposition of fines, forced demotions, and the relocation of union officials. A solidarity appeal is underway to call on the Iraqi government to stop this harassment.
