In a further twist to an already desperate situation for asylum seekers arriving in Australia, the Labor government has now added the tiny island of Nauru to its list of prison camps for refugees arriving by boat. In a move reminiscent of colonial times, Australia is taking advantage of the desperate economic position of Nauru where in a total population of 10,000 people, unemployment is estimated to be as high as 90%. As a union movement, workers need to stand up, fight against this scapegoating, and not allow us, workers, to be divided on national or ethnic grounds.
