A few years ago, the workers at Turkish Airlines (TA) waged a hard struggle against the company to get over 300 sacked union members reinstated. In response the Turkish government managed to organise a take over of the aviation union, Hava Is, as well as splitting the workforce among different sectors. The genuine and left wing union, DİSK-Birleşik Metal İş then started organising in the sector. Unfortunately management are opposing this, and have sacked a long time union activist (former Hava İş delegate) to intimidate workers. Management is pressuring workers to join yellow unions instead of DISK. This is an important struggle for the right of workers to join genuine unions. DISK is asking for solidarity messages for their affiliate DİSK-Birleşik Metal İş and THY Teknik AŞ workers. Messages can be sent to international@birlesikmetal.org.
