About 18 months ago seven union officials were sacked from Busana Prima Global, a garment factory in Bogor, Indonesia. They had complained to the Indonesian Manpower Department about the many systematic violations of labour laws regularly practiced by the company. A profile of Busana Prima Global prepared by the union says that wages are below the minimum, workers have to do unpaid overtime and "worker/laborers at PT Busana Prima Global [find it] difficult to cover their daily life and forced to have another job out side the PT Busana Prima Global such by selling clothes and food, but it still not enough beside of covering their daily life…"
The company produces sportswear for export to Europe and the USA and has links to Korea. The union (SBGTS) would like to build an international campaign around the issues of workers’ rights and the right to organize and AAWL will be linking SBGTS to relevant unions internationally.
