Syria: Workers need to take control

Amid the intensifying conflict in Syria imperialist and other governments are starting to position themselves for the post Assad era. Given the strategic importance of Syria, many of these governments’ only concern is how to gain more power and influence for themselves or their local allies.

We have constantly called for workers in Syria to use their industrial strength to defeat their enemies. We also recognise that in the face of vicious armed repression workers need to organise community defence committees. Such worker-controlled organisations can protect their communities and provide a focus for members of government forces who decide to support the workers’ cause at a critical time.

Workers in Syria need to be vigilant that their current sacrifices will not be in vain. Syrian workers need to organise their own workplaces and communities so as to be ready to take control of the new economic and political spaces as they open up. History has shown that unless workers as a class can take control, overthrowing a repressive regime will not lead to a better life for the majority of us. Workers change the world.
