Tourism in the Maldives is a huge and profitable business, but workers do not share in this. Last year, around 350 workers of the Hilton Conrad Rangali Islands Resort held a work stoppage to highlight their longstanding demand for clarity around their pay. Subsequently, 29 of them were dismissed. Most were union members or activists. In February of this year, the Employment Tribunal found in their favour and ordered for them to be reinstated. They are still waiting, and now there is an international campaign calling for their reinstatement.
