At 11.50am on 15 October 1970, a 112 metre span of the West Gate Bridge collapsed during construction. Approximately 2000 tonnes of steel and concrete came crashing down, taking workers and their machinery, tools and sheds with them. Thirty-five workers lost their lives, many others were injured. Emergency services, nurses, first-aid staff and volunteers worked into the night to search for survivors and account for the dead. Today at 11.30am and CFMEU Victorian Secretary John Setka and AMWU Victorian Secretary Steve Dargavel will be with the families, friends and workmates at the West Gate Memorial site beneath the bridge in Douglas Parade Spotswood.
