On the 31st of January this year, at least 13 workers died in a fire at the Nappco plastic factory located in a building complex in a crowded market area in the Bangladesh capital, Dhaka (see video). Early reports indicate that fire precautions and exits were substandard with many workers trapped inside by the fire. While Bangladesh is known as a hub for the international garment industry, in the last couple of decades the plastic industry, on the back of starvation wages, has also expanded. It now employs around 1.5 million workers. This latest massacre of workers in Bangladesh is only the latest in a string of disasters that once again highlights the terrible health and safety conditions for workers in Bangladesh.
