Following on from the mass murder of workers in the Rana Plaza collapse in Bangladesh in late April, international unions and labour groups have pressured companies to sign on to a binding agreement that includes worker representation. Some major companies like Walmart, Gap and Just Jeans refuse to sign and hold on to their own code of ethics. Self regulation and Corporate Social Responsibility do not work and have led to thousands of workers dying on the job. History has shown that only workers, organised in independent trade unions, have the ability and interest to win and safeguard working conditions.
