On 20 April 2012, AAWL mini news reported that the Korean Government awarded compensation for the death of Ms. Jisook Kim after having contracted aplastic anaemia. AAWL was contacted by one of the advocate activists of SHARPs (Supporters for Health and Rights of People in the semiconductor industry) who has told us that thankfully, Ms. Kim has not died. AAWL apologises for the distress that last week’s report has caused to Ms. Kim and her friends and family.
Ms. Kim was in fact awarded compensation by the Korean Government for contracting aplastic anaemia after working 6 years on the assembly line at the Onyang factory that produces semi conductors.
The issue is still a very immediate one for workers in Korea who are continuing to fight on Health and Safety. Assembly line workers believe that this is only the start of many other such incidents and that there is a history of ill health and cancers among Samsung production line workers.
