The deaths of over 100 people from the collapse of a construction crane in Mecca is just the latest industrial accident to have occurred this year (see here and here). As the biggest country in the Gulf region and one of the richest, Saudi Arabia has a huge construction sector that employs millions of workers, most of whom are temporary workers. Many other migrant workers are found in other sectors of the economy. Many of these workers face terrible working conditions as independent unions are not allowed in Saudi Arabia.
