At least 25 workers were killed and over 100 injured earlier this week, when the four storey factory that they were working in collapsed on them. This collapse is just the latest criminal disaster that has killed workers in Pakistan (see here) and has sad echoes of the Rana Plaza collapse in Dhaka 3 years ago. Factory collapses like this one are not isolated incidents, rather, the logical outcome of an economic system that is based on a race to the bottom where costs are minimised and profits are maximised. Only by workers organising into strong and independent unions can they start to redress this imbalance, halt these murders, and win safe workplaces and living wages.
