In Bahrain, protesters were recently given heavy sentences for alleged crimes committed in protests for democratic reforms earlier in the year. Health care workers have been imprisoned for treating wounded protesters.

Syrian opposition groups continue to demonstrate daily for the removal of the Assad government, with many protesters being killed by government forces. The numbers of soldiers defecting to the uprising groups is growing, as testified by the recent battle in the town of Rastan.
