Inspired by victories against oppressive governments in Tunisia and Egypt, protests and uprisings are continuing right across North Africa and West Asia. Growing popular movements create the opportunity to reshape the current order. They offer a way to overcome the religious, ethnic and gender divisions that have weakened workers across the region.
But workers need to mobilise and organise in our collective interests if we are to achieve significant gains. We produce the capitalists‘ profits. Just replacing the leader of the country will not change this situation. We will keep being told that we have to work harder, work longer, so as to be competitive in our globalised economy. Every worker in every country is told the same thing.
Massive popular uprisings in the Philippines in February 1986, in South Korea in June 1987, and Indonesia in May 1998, brought down dictatorships, but they did not change the economic and political system. Workers in these countries have continued to endure poverty, harsh working conditions and repressive measures, including the killing of labour activists.
Some believe that interventions by imperialist countries can help us. But they don’t. We saw this in Afghanistan in October 2001 and again in Iraq in March 2003.
Workers have the power to control the economy. Direct democratic control of our workplaces and communities by assemblies of working people can begin to restructure the economy in favour of the great majority.
Our strength is a united working class across industries and states. Our power is international industrial action and solidarity. Oppose imperialist interventions. Support solidarity action by workers everywhere.
