Mumia Abu-Jamal was convicted and sentenced to death for the 1981 murder of police officer Daniel Faulkner.
On 7 December 2011 the death penalty was dropped.
Mumia is now sentenced for life with no possibility of parole.
Prior to his arrest he was a Black Panther Party activist, cab driver, and journalist. Since his conviction, his case has received international attention.
Mumia was framed up because of his lifelong struggle against racist oppression and police terror – first as a Black Panther Party spokesperson, then as a MOVE supporter and an outspoken journalist.
