With the garment industry centred in the Asian region, workers in countries like Cambodia and Bangladesh have fought very hard to organise and improve their conditions, both in terms of salary and working conditions. On top of the mass murder that occurred recently at the Rana Plaza in Bangladesh, workers are still being killed at their workplaces as seen this week in Gurgaon, India. International efforts are still invested in getting compensation for workers and their families for some of these disasters. While this effort is very important, the only way to prevent workers dying at work is by having independent unions free from intimidation and repression.
