Workers from Ankur Udyog who were already in dispute for pay and conditions were shot by company security guards on 3 May when they returned to their factory after a May Day march in Delhi. However this violent action did not stop the workers, who intensified their campaign, and solidarity protests spread. The government met the workers’ justified protets with repression and many workers werew arrested, including all the workers’ leaders. Again this caused an escalation of the protests, and now all workers have been released, thanks to a protests campaign taking place across India and internationally.
The workers in Gorakhpur are united in demanding a range of rights for decent living conditions outlined in a Workers Charter. They say that not only are their demands not being met, but that virtually all factories in don’t abide by the current Indian labour laws, which are extremely inadequate in any case.
