Villagers in Jagatsinghpur in Orissa whose lands are to be acquired for the South Korean steel giant POSCO’s mining and steelworks project have been staging an indefinite peaceful protest since January.
On May 15 at around 2.30pm, the police attacked the villagers with rubber bullets, tear gas and lathi charges (baton charge). Over 100 people, mostly women and children were injured in the attack with two people seriously injured.
The POSCO Pratirodh Sangram Samithi (Committee for Resistance Against POSCO) request urgent national and international support to condemn this attack and to ensure that the POSCO does not come at the cost of lives and lands of thousands of villagers and to protest against POSCO’s adamant attitude (obviously for profits) in setting up the project in the area despite people opposing it since 2005.
