On Sunday the 1st of March, tens of thousands of teachers in over 20 cities in Iran held demonstrations against low wages and repression against the right to organise. Current teachers’ salaries are below the official poverty line in Iran. Of importance was the fact that many of the protesters raised political demands against the government. These, and other recent labour protests, are starting to worry the Iranian government as it fears that large scale labour protests will escalate this year due to the worsening economic situation for workers.
