An historic decision by a court in Turin, Italy was handed down on 13 February criminalising the actions of asbestos company, Eternit.
Eternit had four plants, the largest of which was in the town, Casale Monferrato. 1,800 of the town’s 35,000 people have died of asbestos-related diseases, including 800 that didn’t work for the company. Every week, doctors in this small town discover new cases of asbestos-related diseases.
The Turin court ordered Eternit’s owners to pay a total of €95 million in compensation to the families of the victims, to the town of Casale, trade unions and other parties. The two owners, Stephan Schmidheiny, 64 and Louis de Cartier, 89 were also sentenced to 16 years imprisonment.
