The collapse of a building under construction in the central Chinese city of Beiwudu in Wuyang county, which killed 17 workers and injured many others, is unfortunately not an isolated incident. Latest reports put the number of major structural building failures so far this year at over 80, causing deaths and injuries to many hundreds of workers. It is not surprising that after many years of repression, workers in China are increasingly rebelling against this atrocious reality where workers’ lives are seen as disposable.
