The opposition coalition in Malaysia that has come together under the banner of ‘Bersih’ (which means “clean” in the Malay language) to oppose corruption and nepotism in the government is gearing up for a new mass rally. While previous mass rallies have involved tens of thousands of people in Malaysia, the next one on November 19, will have solidarity demonstrations in cities all around the world in a show of co-ordinated actions. Given the Malaysian government’s ability to use repressive laws, the involvement of the labour movement in these protests will be crucial for its success.
