Philippines: Industrial struggles escalate

In a dramatic escalation, Philippine Airlines yesterday sent termination notices to 2,600 of their employees, to take effect on September 30. The company plans to outsource these jobs, reducing wages and conditions and stripping the workers of union coverage. The Philippine Airlines Employees Association (PALEA) has called for solidarity in resisting this attack. While Philippine Airlines has organised other airlines to cover their routes in the event of a strike, the International Transport Federation has declared that transport workers will not be used as scabs against Philippine Airlines workers. Send your solidarity messages to PALEA President Gerry Rivera: gerryrivera59@yahoo.com More details here.

These attacks are not isolated to the Philippines. In a similar battle, aircraft maintenance engineers have launched rolling industrial action against the Australian airline Qantas to prevent further outsourcing of their work. Details here.

Meanwhile, militant labour federation the KMU has vowed to step up its campaign for a 125 peso a day wage rise for all workers in the Philippines. KMU secretary general Roger Soluta declared: “Capitalists have steadily amassed greater profits for years while workers’ wages have been kept at the barest minimum. Threats of massive layoffs will not deter us. We plan to intensify our fight for a significant wage hike in the coming months” More here.
