The systemic exploitation of migrant workers in the Gulf countries of West Asia has been well documented before (see here and here). A recent case has highlighted the barbarity that many of these workers have to endure with the case of a Sri Lankan maid being sentenced to death by stoning for adultery. While the Sri Lankan Employment ministry has stated they will try to save the woman’s life, the Sri Lankan Ambassador to Saudi Arabia blamed the woman herself and stated that she shouldn’t have come to work in Saudi Arabia if she didn’t like the laws.
