The South Korean government is continuing to target workers who are organised or politically active. Recently it successfully prosecuted almost 1,400 public servants and teachers, members of the Korean Government Employees Union (KGEU) and the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union (KTU), for supporting political parties.
The government is now targeting hundreds more teachers and public servants for alleged violation of these same punitive laws which make it unlawful for public workers to either support or criticise political parties. These laws are clearly aimed at stopping workers from being politically active.
The Public Services International (PSI) and Education International (EI) have joined forces with the KGEU and KTU to request that trade unions and concerned citizens write to the Korean government now to demand an end to the persecution of KGEU and KTU members. More on the campaign page here.
