As many as 5875 Indian workers died in Gulf countries in a single year, 2015, according to Indian government reports. We’ve reported extensively on the conditions for migrant workers and the need to fight for the rights of all workers world-wide (see here, here and here). The highest number of fatalities occurred in Saudi Arabia with a reported 2691 deaths, followed by the UAE which reported 1540 deaths. While Qatar reported 279 deaths, there were 520 Indian workers who died in Oman, 223 in Bahrain, 611 in Kuwait and 11 in Iraq. These workers are not numbers! They died because of capitalisms ferocious race to the bottom, which places profits above workers’ lives. We must organise for health and safety at work, no matter which country we are in.
