Union actions for Palestine

Australian unions have been supporting solidarity actions against Israeli aggression and in defence of Gaza

The following motion was moved by Kevin Bracken (MUA) and passed unanimously by Victorian Trades Hall Council Executive on the morning of Friday July 25:

That this meeting of the Victorian Trades Hall Executive:

Condemns Israel's latest horrific assault on the people of Palestine, which has resulted in over 600 deaths in the past three weeks — the overwhelming majority of the dead being civilians, and many of them children.

We reiterate previous policy supporting a strategy of Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions against the state of Israel, similar to actions designed to isolate the former Apartheid regime of South Africa.

We supports the peaceful community protests called in solidarity with the people of Palestine, to be held on Saturday 26 July at 1pm, and Friday 1 August at 6pm, outside the State Library in Swanston St.

We urge affiliates to support these protests through attendance, publicity, and other means.

Rally organisers were notified on Saturday of the following statement by the Australian Education Union (Vic):

The AEU (Vic Branch) condemns Israel’s latest horrific assault on the people of Palestine, which has resulted in over 750 deaths in the past three weeks — the overwhelming majority of the dead being civilians, and many of them children.

The AEU supports the peaceful community protests called in solidarity with the people of Palestine, to be held on Saturday 26 July at 1pm, and Friday 1 August at 5pm, outside the State Library in Swanston St.

In addition to the solidarity actions from VTHC, these are also motions from the Australian labour movement condemning Israel's murderous war in Gaza, and answering the call from unions and civil society organisations in Gaza for urgent international solidarity.

The MUA is supporting the stand of the ITF in condemning Israel's attacks, and is contributing to an international union aid effort which is now under way. The Victorian branch of mental health union HACSU and the Queensland Teachers Union have issued statements condemning Israel, while CFMEU (Vic) Assistant Secretary Shaun Reardon put a statement of solidarity on the union's facebook page on July 17.

There is also a statement on the website of APHEDA (Union Aid Abroad) — the ACTU's aid organisation — that describes the catastrophic situation in Gaza. One of the hospitals in Gaza that Australian unionists have been supporting through APHEDA, the al-Wafa rehabilitation hospital, has been systematically shelled and then totally destroyed by the Israeli army — one of many attacks on the critical health infrastructure of Gaza.

Internationally very many unions are moving to defend Palestine. We wish to highlight the call from South African trade unions that have called on unionists worldwide to "do unto apartheid Israel what you did to apartheid South Africa".
