The poultry industry is a large and expanding sector in Thailand with the global consumption of chicken meat steadily increasing. A recently released report has found widespread exploitation of the workforce. The report also found that standards and regulations of the industry are mainly concerned with food safety and not workers’ conditions. The majority of the workforce are migrant workers from either Cambodia or Myanmar who are used as a cheap and disposable workforce. The abuse of migrant workers in Thailand is not isolated to this sector alone (see here and here).
