The 33 days long strike by workers at the Maruti-Suzuki plant in the Gurgaon region of Northern India has ended in defeat. As reported previously, this strike had become a significant dispute in one of India’s largest industrial zones. The workers will now have to sign the ‘good conduct bond’, their preferred union will not be recognised, and only 18 of 62 suspended workers will be taken back by the company. This is not the end of the industrial struggle, but it is a significant defeat. There are reports of workers considering further action. Read the International Metalworkers’ Federation here.
Looking at other industries in India, the strike by textile workers in Ludhiana is spreading.
